WGA Thwarted with one file deletion
[edit] For some reason people are reporting this isn't working on their systems. I am trying to reproduce it "not working" on my machines without any luck. I assure you I am just simply moving the file to the Recyle bin and updating without validation. I restore it, I must validate.
I will post anything I find to cause this problems here.

Simply delete "GWFSPidGen.dll"

Well I was playing around with WGA and I found a simple way to disable it (without an annoying prompt telling you to enable the plugin in IE).

Doesnt work... I just deleted it (though its still in my recycle bin) and I ran Windows Update.. still doing the WGA thing and tells me im not valid)

It will work if you rename or delete both LegitCheckControl.DLL and GWFSPidGen.dll from your system32 folder. LegitCheckControl.dll is the file that's used to check your system.

Just paste this into the address-bar after loading Windows Update:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')
Click Go, then click Custom. No need to delete any files. :)

Make the javascript a Favorite.
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')
You'll have to make the favorite and then edit it with the script in the URL box. Windows comes back with "That file type is not registered, Do you want to continue? Yes.
This is on Volume Lic SP1.

There are several different "authentication failed" messages depending on the product key you're using. I have 2 PCs and one says i'm running a version designed for businesses running multiple copies, and the other says that the key was never issued by microsoft. The file deletion did not work for me but the java trick did. Thanks for pointing it out though.

This really helped me out...thanks so much. Deleting those files in Windows/system32 didn't help me either, but disabling the java option in "manage add ons" worked like a dream.

As of August 13 2005 the javascript hack does not seem to work.
However, I have found that the author's hack work. Unfortunately it takes a little bit of effort, and you have to delete two files (I renamed them)
GWFSPidGen.dll
LegitCheckControl
both found in C:\WINDOWS\System32
So this is how to do it:
- Rename those files. (I added a .shit to them)
- Go to windows update where it will make you download genuine advantage bullshit again)
- Get those files (again)
- When it's done downloading them and you see a contrinue button you repeat the first step (rename the newly created files, they are the same ones)
- Then click continue.
- enjoy

Wow... I can't believe it's that easy! The JavaScript thing worked just fine for me but this is even better! You actually have to leave those two files intact, and it'll say it's trying to access a disabled add-on but if you just ignore that it works fine!

Then just deleting the file "GWFSPidGen.dll" did not work either.
Disabling the addon however did work for me.

ok, after watching all this i still have a question: how the hell can i do to avoid that annoying WGA thing on my windows 2000 pc? all solutions here apparently only works with XP and that disabling add-on thing just worked fine on my WinXP computer...but what can i do on my win2000?? that java thing didn´t work and this crap is killing me out. i need help please!!

javascript fix works fine in win 2000. When you get to the "express" or "custom" stage, type the java script, and hit enter, then choose express or custom.
Or I guess if youve already installed kb892130 (WGA) then find the WGA crack (LegitCheckControl.dll), drag and drop into system32 dir. Then when you go to any download at MS it says checked enjoy your download.

ms changed the permissions of the WGA dll you disable in the IE so they have the admin rights not you ,
thats bunch of bullshit cause im the admin of my pc not the fuckin MS ,

ok guys this worked for me. xp pro sp2. thanks to microsofts own site.
this will work.go here if ya wanna read.1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
2. Expand Computer Configuration or User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, expand Internet Explorer, expand Security Features, and then click Add-on Management. disable all of em (not sure if thats nesseccary but i did it anyways) restart internet explorer. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256#XSLTH3120121123120121120120

i had to do this because my option to disable the windows genuine advantage inside of internet explorer under manage add-ons was greyed out. hope this helps ya

as from March 2006 ( 03/06 ) nothing of the above work anymore, making a simple search based on new version of DLL in google (search: legitcheckcontrol.dll 1.5.512.0 ) found this page: www.mininova.org/tor/240281 which gave mi this file: wgapatch(1.5.512.0).exe.torrent which has to be DL with Bittorrent (www.bittorrent.com). It's a very small (14k) .EXE which patches the new DLL so as to believe it's original... IT WORKED. I had to do all of the above but was worthwhile. Hope it helps, my name is Isidro.

i posted above your post i posted that on march 2nd.it does work.my problem was to disable the active x part of the wga.well i couldnt it was greyed out.so the first step was to get it not greyed out then the java thing DID work march 3/2/06 on the site.but u got my curiosity up and i reversed all my settings back in internet explorer to normal.tryed to update and there was the message again,couldnt validate.tryed the patch IT DOES WORK.good job isidro.much easier then my way.now we got 2 solutions
now how bout that vista 5308 beta o.s. activation thing hummm! :-)

This file is the WGA file that is attempted to manually install fromwindows update.
I ran it and went back to Windows Update and no more error.

It is better to be prompted then to get an updated later than necessary, allowing the computer network knowing you arettrying to update, to only end up downloading an additional problem thru the network of computers, before it gets to your computer. Doing self updates is slower and actually very unsafe and dangerous to your system, allowing the possibility of a corrupted update!!!

As of 4.30.06, I tried all of the above. The javascript works in terms of disabling the check, but the installation still fails. I am no computer jock. Any ideas?

Look, here's the deal.. OK, the MBSA is a great tool and I reccomend it.. BUT.. I don't know what all the fuss is about.. there is no need to hack your reg. or delete file or replace legitcheck.dll or whatever... Just turn on Automatic Updates, and change the settings to 'Notify Me But Don't Automatically Download or Install Them'
Now when it says it has updates for you.. check them... wow what a concept.. and don't download the WGA Update (KB905474) - TADA! Done. let the auto updates go through their cycle for a few days as it gets you all updated.. with no WGA checks, no nothing. And then turn off the automatic updates and just use MBSA to get all the real critical stuff, or keep auto-updates on and just READ about the updates it is offering you before you download or install them.
Microsoft HAS to legally disclose the content and intent of each update. They have to, and you have the right to refuse any update you like.

Oh yeah, and when you use MBSA.. save the updates, put them on a CD, so if you ever have to re-install you'll already have most of the updates.

I don't understand how stupid you people are. Set Auto-Updates ON. Under the options for Auto-Updates choose the one where it says NOTIFY ME BUT DON'T DOWNLOAD OR INSTALL THEM.

Either continue to use Auto-Updates or turn it off and just use MBSA.
Either or both options will work fine.
MBSA 2.0 even has little 'download' links for each critical XP and OFFICE Update you need.
